Nordeste Highway: Stunning Landscapes at Your Own Pace

The best way to reach Playa Cosón is by driving the impressive Nordeste Highway (Juan Pablo II) from Santo Domingo. This first-class road winds through mountains covered in tropical vegetation, features illuminated tunnels with artistic murals, and offers viewpoints with spectacular panoramic views of Samaná Bay. If you choose a car rental in Santo Domingo with KD Rent Car, you can enjoy the journey with total comfort and freedom, stopping at viewpoints to photograph the landscapes.

Once in Las Terrenas, we suggest continuing the route along the coast eastward, where you will find Playa Bonita —famous for its perfect surfing waves— and further ahead, the picturesque town of Las Galeras. At the end of the road awaits Playa Rincón, considered one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, with over 3 kilometers of nearly virgin white sand and the refreshing Caño Frío river.

Driving Tips

  • Recommended Vehicle: A modern sedan like a Hyundai Elantra or Kia Optima is perfect for the main roads and the Nordeste Highway. If you plan to explore secondary roads, choose an SUV like the Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda CR-V.
  • Fuel: Fill up the tank in Las Terrenas before heading out to more remote beaches, as gas stations are scarce in rural areas.
  • Enjoy the Journey: The Nordeste route is an experience in itself. Drive calmly, enjoy the landscapes, and take advantage of the freedom that comes with having your own rental vehicle.

Playa Coson FAQ

It is not the most recommended beach for small children because it faces the open ocean at the mouth of the Coson River. This creates strong waves and constant rip currents. If traveling with family, it is ideal for playing at the shore or walking, but for safe swimming it is better to move toward more sheltered areas like Punta Bonita or Playa Bonita.
It is one of the best destinations in Las Terrenas for kitesurfing, surfing, and bodysurfing thanks to its constant wind and waves. In fact, the beach has its own local kitesurfing school. It is also a highly popular place for long walks of over 6 kilometers along the pristine coast.
It is mostly a public, pristine, and very quiet beach. Being a little further from the urban center of Las Terrenas, it usually does not get crowded, not even on weekends. It is the perfect place if you are looking for disconnection, privacy, and a landscape full of coconut trees without crowds.
Yes, it is totally possible. You can walk east along the entire shore until you reach the spectacular sandbar of Punta Bonita, which connects directly to Playa Bonita. It is one of the most beautiful and recommended coastal walks on the Samana Peninsula.
Access to the beach is completely free. You can arrive by vehicle (car, scooter, or four-wheeler) through marked public accesses from the Atlantic Tourist Boulevard. Some local restaurants will allow you to use their private parking if you eat there.
The best time is during the dry season, from December to April, when temperatures are cooler and there is less chance of rain. However, if your main goal is to practice wind sports like kitesurfing, the summer months (June to August) also offer excellent wind conditions.
